Frequently Asked Questions

How does CaptionSnag extract YouTube transcripts?

CaptionSnag reads the publicly available caption tracks that YouTube provides for each video. These include both manually uploaded subtitles and auto-generated captions. No YouTube API key is needed.

Does this work with any YouTube video?

It works with any video that has captions or subtitles. Most videos have auto-generated English captions at minimum. Private videos and videos with captions explicitly disabled will not work.

What formats can I export the transcript in?

You can export as plain text (just the words), timestamped text (each line prefixed with its time), SRT (industry-standard subtitle format), or WebVTT (web subtitle format used in HTML5 video).

Is there a limit on how many transcripts I can extract?

No. CaptionSnag is completely free with no rate limits, no account required, and no daily caps. Use it as much as you need.

Can I extract transcripts in languages other than English?

Yes. If the video has captions in multiple languages, you can select any available language from the dropdown in the toolbar. This includes both manual and auto-generated captions.

How does the AI Summary feature work?

The AI Summary uses Google Gemini to analyze the transcript text and generate a concise set of bullet points covering the key topics discussed in the video. It processes the first ~4000 characters of the transcript.

Can I click on timestamps to jump to that part of the video?

Yes. Every timestamp in the transcript is clickable and opens the YouTube video at that exact moment in a new tab.
